A green thumb I am not. I have grand plans of a lush thriving garden. I buy the pots and the plants and occasionally I have a victory — it’s not that hard to keep a devils ivy alive — but mostly my plants end up a little sad and tired looking. They don’t get the nurture they deserve.
In plain english I don’t water them enough!
Think of your body like a plant. It needs water. If it doesn’t get enough … it wilts.
Just like that thirsty plant, our bodies crave hydration to thrive. Drinking the good stuff (H20) boosts energy, clears skin, and keeps every system humming.
Not only that but staying properly hydrated is a game changer when it comes to fitness. Hydration is so important for fitness because it:
– Improves Muscle Function and Strength: Dehydration makes your muscles work harder, causing cramps and early fatigue. Staying hydrated ensures your muscles contract properly and remain strong throughout your workout.
-. Enhances Endurance and Stamina: Hydration keeps your energy levels stable by regulating your body temperature and helping your heart work efficiently. This allows you to workout more efficiently without burning out.
– Speeds Up Muscle Recover: After a workout, water flushes out toxins and helps transport nutrients to your muscles, speeding up the repair process and reducing soreness.
5 Easy Ways to Stay Hydrated
Tip: If plain water gets boring, add slices of citrus or cucumber for a refreshing twist.
Don’t wait until you’re thirsty—by then, you’re already dehydrated. Aim to drink small amounts of water consistently, especially before and after exercise. Start your day with a glass of water and keep a bottle handy wherever you go. There are so many great options available now and we always like to focus on healthier options like glass or stainless steel.
Snack Idea: A bowl of berries and cucumber slices with a sprinkle of sea salt post-workout can replenish both water and electrolytes.
3. Include Electrolytes After Intense Workouts
When you sweat, you lose essential minerals like sodium and potassium, which help regulate muscle function and fluid balance.
Pro Tip: Coconut water is a natural way to get your electrolytes without added sugar. A pinch of Sea Salt (not table salt) and a squeeze of lemon also works, or brands like Sodii and LMNT are great options to carry with you on the go.
4. Hydrate with Herbal Teas
Herbal teas like mint or chamomile can be a refreshing way to hydrate without caffeine. They offer variety, additional health benefits and can be enjoyed hot or cold.
Tip: Try iced herbal teas in the afternoon when it’s warm or a warm cup of tea to unwind before bed in the afternoon.
5. Set Hydration Goals
If you struggle to remember to drink water, set simple goals throughout the day. You could use a water-tracking app, or challenge yourself to finish a certain number of glasses before lunch.
Hack: Carry a reusable water bottle with you no matter what your plans are for the day. Keep it in the car if it’s too much to carry (just make sure it’s not plastic in this case) and ensure you have finished it before you get home.
You know how the song goes – “Everywhere you go, you always take the weather with you…”
Our saying goes… “Everywhere you go, you always take a water bottle with you”
