Small steps… Big change: The Secret to Lasting Health and Fitness

Don’t worry, you’re not alone in trying to make massive changes in your life and falling short. I’ve been there. That 20 min ab workout I promised myself I would do everyday, the daily running I committed to, workout program written and never competed.

I’ve been there.

I’ve failed.

Done it all.

But then somehow, for some reason nearly 20 years ago something changed.I did what I never ever thought I was going to be able to do.

I started exercising and I didn’t stop.

It was really thrilling. After so many failed attempts to be able to actually be someone I always wanted to be — a fit and strong woman. I didn’t realise my genius at the time and it took me many years to work out what I had done and how to replicate it but basically there were a very few simple steps.

Small steps I’d love to share with you so you can create change more easily in your own life.

  1. I paid for a gym membership. I didn’t have much money at the time and so committing money to my goal meant that there was some sort of sacrifice (my income). I knew I couldn’t afford to waste this investment.

  1. I made a very concrete plan on what my goals were for the gym. I was going to go 3 x per week. I could do anything I wanted in that time and I only had to stay for 30 minutes. That was it. 3 x a week, 30 mins, do whatever.

After a few weeks I got a bit bored of the treadmill and ventured over to the weights, then I signed up to my first gym class. Within 3 months I was hooked. I was going nearly every day because I just loved it so much. It totally snowballed into my career and 16 years later I still love it.

And it all started with a step.

A tiny one, a doable one.

When it comes to your health and fitness goals, or heck, any type of life goals for that matter it will nearly always feel overwhelming.

That’s normal.

Almost a necessary part of change.

You need to get to the point where you are so uncomfortable that the thought of NOT changing seems unpalatable.

Setting overly ambitious goals —like working out every day, overhauling your diet, or running a marathon—sounds inspiring, but these big leaps can often be unsustainable.

The truth? Real, lasting change comes not from giant leaps but from small, consistent steps that build momentum over time.

Why Small Steps Work

Big changes can be daunting. They require a huge amount of effort and willpower, which is hard to maintain when life gets busy.

Small steps, on the other hand, are manageable and easier to fit into your routine. They help you create habits that stick because they don’t feel like a complete upheaval of your life.

For example, instead of committing to an hour-long workout six days a week, start with three 30-minute sessions. This kind of sustainable approach is easier to manage and builds the foundation for long-term fitness. Online workout programs, like 3×30, make this process even simpler by providing short, guided workouts you can do anytime, anywhere.

The Power of Momentum

Each small step you take adds up. Think of it like climbing a staircase—each step may feel small, but over time, they take you higher and closer to your goals. Success breeds success and builds momentum, you build confidence and motivation to take the next step.

For example:

  • Committing to a 30-minute workout three times a week may lead to enjoying exercise more.
  • Drinking one extra glass of water a day may help you feel more energised and ready to make healthier food choices.
  • Stretching for five minutes every morning can improve flexibility and encourage more movement throughout the day.

These small wins create momentum, making the next step feel easier and more achievable.

Why Small Steps Create Big Change

The key to big change isn’t a dramatic overhaul—it’s consistency. When you take small steps regularly, they become habits, and those habits lead to sustainable, long-term change. Over time, you’ll look back and realise just how far you’ve come.

The best part? Starting small removes the pressure to be perfect. Even if you miss a step here or there, it’s easier to get back on track because your routine is manageable and not overwhelming.
